Uchideshi Program

Home » Uchideshi Program

History

Commencing with the dedication of our new dojo in 2009, Aikido in Fredericksburg has offered the best Uchideshi facilities. An Uchideshi is a “live-in student”. You would participate in daily immersion training supervised by our 6th dan Chief Instructor with the support of our dozens of black belt senior students. With the opportunity to train 20 hours per week or more, progress to blackbelt and beyond can be swift.  Stays of one week to one year can be arranged.  Our program is modeled after the Iwama Dojo in Japan — the birthplace of Aikido.

Uchideshi can be perfect for a gap year, a personal retreat, or a time of transition.  You would still have time for work or school while being an Uchideshi.

Requirements

We are one of the few dojos with an Uchideshi program that accepts beginners as well as dan rank holders. Beginners and advanced students of Aikido can participate and will receive an immersion experience of direct transmission of Aikido. Reasonable costs cover training and housing (some barter opportunities exist, too). Requirements for a long-term stay are reliable transportation, health insurance, and an open mind.

Benefits

As an Uchideshi, you will challenge yourself and grow, have fun, and learn traditional Aikido via this immersion program.  Increase fitness, reduce stress, make new friends.

“This has been a remarkable experience for me and I’ve learned so much in the 3 weeks I’ve been here. The Aikido community you’ve built here is truly special. Every time I stepped onto the mat I was training with earnest partners that worked with me so we could both improve. The quality of the sempai at this dojo is a huge asset and a testament to your work developing your students.” – Tyson

“It’s hard to believe that it’s been the last 7 months that I’ve been uchideshi. I started with the idea that this would only be a month. I don’t even know what to say. If it weren’t for this community, I’m not sure where I would be. I look back on the last 10 years of training and realize that I am at my most peaceful moments when I am here. This is my sanctuary. I look forward to the next 10 years.” – Scott

“Thank you for this opportunity—now coming to an end for now!—to be part of, learn with, play with, train with, celebrate with this Aikido in Fredericksburg family. Aikido is, most everywhere welcoming, carrying O Sensei’s manifestation, fundamental peace-making. AIF is a special level of realization. I appreciate the patience, kindness, and friendship I have received. I value the many levels of learning that are protected and extended here, learning on and off the mat. It is a challenge to be present, to blend, to get out of the way—of myself and others. I’m grateful for being well-guided on this path.” – Rand

“The experience exceeded my expectations. I initially thought I was just here to train in Aikido techniques, but soon found my stay was to entail much more. My experience was not only a growth in physical well-being but also one of spiritual growth. I’ve begun to understand the universality of Aikido.” – Michael

“I truly felt that being an uchideshi has helped me improve as an aikidoka and as a human being.  I’m truly grateful to have had the opportunity and I hope I can come back.” – Anika
